Reflux Treatment
For patients suffering from chronic acid reflux, also known as GastroEsophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), general surgeons Brian Albers, MD and Jon Geers, MD are now performing an incisionless procedure to treat reflux through the use of MMCH’s new EsophyX device.
About Acid Reflux
Although heartburn is the most common symptom of acid reflux, patients may also experience:
• Regurgitation
• Hoarseness or sore throat
• Frequent swallowing
• Asthma
• Pain or discomfort in the chest
• Reflux-related sleep disorders
• Yellow fluid or stains on pillow after sleep
• Excessive clearing of the throat
• Persistent cough
• Burning in the mouth or throat
• Intolerance of certain foods
• Bloating
• Dental erosions or therapy-resistant gum disease or inflammation
In a healthy patient, there is a natural valve between the esophagus and the stomach that forms a physical barrier preventing stomach fluids from backwashing, or “refluxing,” up into the esophagus. In a patient with chronic GERD, this valve has become dysfunctional.
About the Procedure
The procedure is performed through the patient's mouth and treats the underlying cause of GERD by reconstructing the gastroesophageal valve to restore the body’s natural protection against reflux. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. The procedure itself typically takes less than one hour. Most patients can go home the next day and can return to work and most normal activities within a few days. Benefits of the procedure include fewer complications, faster recovery, and no scarring. A recent study showed 93% of patients remained free of heartburn symptoms and 79% were off daily PPIs at two years after the procedure.
