Our driver’s program can assist a variety of people needing help with safe driving including the elderly, new drivers, stroke patients, and individuals with vision difficulties.
Our comprehensive driving program provides a review of pre-driving skills, as well as objective assessments of a person’s ability to drive safely.
Our evaluation process includes clinical and driving assessments, and our therapist provides training on specialized driving equipment, special needs driving instruction and remediation of lost driving skills.
The first phase of the program includes a comprehensive assessment of a patient’s pre-driving skills and their medical history. Patients will be screened for vision, visual perception, range of motion, cognition, and physical skills.
The next phase is an on-the-road assessment in our rehab vehicle to evaluate actual driving abilities. Our rehab vehicle is specially equipped with a passenger-side training brake. Following the driving assessment, our therapist will discuss recommendations and therapy options, if appropriate. Sometimes, just a refresher course on basic driving is all that is needed.
